With an increasing number of countries decriminalising and even legalising cannabis, it’s no wonder that more and more people see it as harmless. This shift in attitude, coupled with cannabis strains with ever-higher THC (the main psychoactive compound), innovative consumption methods, and growing societal acceptance, have all contributed to a notable rise in cannabis use and addiction.

While cannabis addiction is overshadowed by the more notorious reputation of other drugs, cannabis use can easily become habitual, leading to a decline in the ability to meet your daily responsibilities, maintain healthy relationships, and slowly deteriorating general health.

Cannabis addiction can be difficult to overcome alone. Although cannabis doesn’t create a physical dependency the way opioids or amphetamines do, a number of factors contribute to its psychological addictiveness.

Over the course of 20 years, Gladstones Clinic has aided numerous people in breaking free from cannabis addiction. Our specialised cannabis addiction rehab programme makes use of various treatments and therapies to ensure that our patients lose their desire for cannabis and embrace the benefits of a sober life.

Why do people abuse cannabis?

Cannabis abuse often stems from a variety of psychological, social, and environmental reasons, similar to alcohol. For many, the allure of cannabis lies in its perceived ability to alleviate stress, anxiety, and pain. As more and more societies normalise the use of cannabis, a growing number of people see it as a harmless escape from daily pressures. The immediate effects of relaxation, euphoria, and altered sensory perception can be very enticing if one isn’t aware of the side effects.

Additional factors that contribute to cannabis use, other than being unaware of its long-term side effects, include peer pressure (especially in younger demographics); using cannabis to self-medicate mental health issues like depression, anxiety disorder, or PTSD; and general increased availability of the drug.

When to seek help for cannabis abuse

Cannabis, while often perceived as harmless, can lead to dependency and disrupt your daily life. Being aware of the signs of cannabis abuse and acting swiftly and decisively is essential for early intervention and treatment. If any of the statements below apply to you, Gladstones Clinic recommends speaking to a cannabis addiction treatment specialist who can advise you on ways to regain control.

What happens in cannabis addiction treatment?

Our cannabis addiction rehab therapy programme spans a minimum of 28 days and is designed to help our patients understand the underlying causes of their addiction to cannabis and learn techniques to help them put it out of their minds and, ultimately, their lives.

1. Addiction Assessment & Consultation

This critical first step allows us to understand your relationship with the drug and diagnose any co-occurring mental health conditions that might be contributing to your addiction. Recognising the complexity of substance addiction, we avoid one-size-fits-all solutions. This understanding of your unique situation is vital for creating a cannabis addiction treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

2. Detoxification (Detox)

Compared to detoxing from alcohol and opioids, detoxing from cannabis is relatively simple. Although cannabis addiction doesn’t entail the intense physical dependency created by many other drugs, the first few days sober are nonetheless typically uncomfortable and marked by mild anxiety and, in some cases, mild depression. Cannabis detox usually takes 3 to 5 days, and during this time, you can expect professional counselling to help you manage cravings and anxiety. If required, the Gladstones therapeutic team can prescribe a short course of anti-anxiety medication to help you through your cannabis detox.

3. Primary Care

Primary care is the sum of the treatments and therapies you will receive during your stay at Gladstones. It encompasses a wide range of therapies that aim to help our patients understand all aspects of their addiction, including its roots, triggers, and effects. Our approach to cannabis addiction treatment is holistic, meaning we address all aspects of physical, psychological, emotional, and social health and consists of a wide range of time-tested and evidence-based therapies. These include CBT, DPT, and group therapy, with many more available based on each patient’s unique situation.

4. Secondary Care, Tertiary Care, and Aftercare

Gladstones Clinic is 100% committed to our patients’ long-term recovery and happiness. We offer post-primary treatment options at various levels and intensities to help our patients stay on track with their recovery, successfully reintegrate into a community and thrive in a life free from addiction. With Gladstones Clinic as your cannabis addiction treatment partner, there’s always someone to talk to in your time of need.
